Shalom my friends and Welcome to Scripture Scribbles – my notes and thoughts on the weekly Torah portion. This week’s Torah portion is a double portion. Behar meaning on the mountain and Bechukotai meaning in My statutes. This portion begins with the instructions for the Sabbath principle being applied to the land.
As always, test everything to the Word, keep what is good and throw out the rest. Remember, we are all on a journey and I am certainly no authority on anything. Honestly, I’m just stumbling along like everyone else, doing the best I can. 😉
T29 Behar/Bechukotai | בהר/בחקותי | “On the Mountain/In My Statutes”
Torah: Leviticus 25:1-27:34
Prophets: Jeremiah 16:19-17:14
Brit Hadasha: Luke 4:14-22; Matthew 16:20-28
📖 1 Thessalonians 5:21 … but test everything; hold fast what is good.
Behar / Bechukotai LEVITICUS 25:1-27:34
Lev 25 Chapter 25 shows us the Sabbath principle and how it is applied to the land.
There appears to be a contradiction between verse 5 and verse 6, however there really isn’t. It just says that you can’t harvest (meaning the field) or store up like you normally would, but you can use the produce that grows to feed your family.
👣 I don’t know if you have ever had a garden but I remember one year I decided not to have a garden. That year we had so many things just spring up and grow like crazy all over the garden. It was truly amazing!! This is what I think about when I read this passage. It is truly amazing to see how the Sabbath of the land still provides food for the people.
Lev 25:8 Then in the 49th year on the day of Atonement, the shofar shall be blown to consecrate the year of Jubilee. The Sabbath for the land will be for 2 years (year 49 for the regular Sabbath of the land and year 50 for the Jubilee)
There are lots of things that happen at the Jubilee such as returning to your land, and freedom from servitude,
Lev 26:3-13 Verse 3 begins with an IF/THEN statement: 3 “If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, 4 then…
This section is a wonderful promise!! YHWH tells us how He will bless us for our obedience.
👣 There are a lot of IF/THEN statements in the Bible. I have begun to underline them in red when I see them in my bible so that I can pay extra attention to these. When the Father is very intentional about telling us IF you do this, THEN I will do this. I don’t know about you, but I certainly want to make sure I sit up and take notice of those things!
Lev 26:14-17 Here again we see an IF/THEN statement: 14 “But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments, 15 if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant,
16 then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. 17 I will set my face against you, and you shall be struck down before your enemies. Those who hate you shall rule over you, and you shall flee when none pursues you.
Here are some verses to take notice of:
Lev 26:18 And if in spite of this you will not listen to me, then I will discipline you again sevenfold for your sins…
26:21 Then if you walk contrary to me and will not listen to me, I will continue striking you, sevenfold for your sins…
Lev 26:23 And if by this discipline you are not turned to me but walk contrary to me, then…
Lev 26:27 But if in spite of this you will not listen to me, but walk contrary to me, then…
26:40 But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers in their treachery that they committed against me, and also in walking contrary to me…
👣 It is important to remember that the Father is using these punishments to cause people to turn back to Him and YHWH has ALWAYS been a God of GRACE!
Lev 27 This chapter is all about Vows made to YHWH.
Behar / Bechukotai Jeremiah 16:19-17:14
👣 It is difficult to read Jeremiah and not see the state of things today in it. It is definitely a hard read with such heaviness.
📖 Jer 16:10-21 O Lord, my strength and my stronghold,
my refuge in the day of trouble,
to you shall the nations come
from the ends of the earth and say:
“Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies,
worthless things in which there is no profit.
20 Can man make for himself gods?
Such are not gods!” 21 “Therefore, behold, I will make them know, this once I will make them know my power and my might, and they shall know that my name is the Lord.”
👣 How often do we hear things like, “follow your heart” or “your heart knows what’s right” But here we see that our hearts are deceitful and sick. We MUST be more concerned with what the WORD says than what our hearts are telling us. Our Creator is searching our hearts because only HE knows what is in there. Honestly, I’m not even sure I know what is in the deep, dark, recesses of my heart, but I’m sure it is deceitful and desperately sick.
📖 Jer 17: 9-10 The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?
10 “I the Lord search the heart
and test the mind,
to give every man according to his ways,
according to the fruit of his deeds.”
Behar / Bechukotai Luke 4:14-22; Matthew 16:20-28
👣 I love this passage in Luke! So here is Yeshua, participating in the reading of the Torah portion cycle and on this day it is Isaiah 61. However, instead of reading all of 61, our Messiah only reads the part that pertains to Him! And then He says: “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” How incredible is that????
📖 Matthw 16:23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
👣 Today, I want to focus on our minds. Our minds are truly the largest battlefield the adversary has. It is in our minds that we lose the battles because we believe the lies of man. It is in our minds that we accept that we are not: good enough, worthy of love, beautiful, etc…
We must start taking our thoughts captive. We must start kicking the adversaries thoughts out of our minds and set our minds on the things of YWHW.
I can hear you asking me but how? How do I set my mind on the things of YHWH? Check out this for the answer:
📖 Phil 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
I know, its hard, trust me when I say I struggle with this every single day.
But what does the Father tell us?
📖 Deut 30:11 “For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off.
I challenge you to write Phil 4:8 down and put it somewhere that you can read it every day. Try to focus on good things in your life and being grateful for those things!! Let’s start winning some battles!
📖 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. ~Psalms 19:14
📖 I have stored up YOUR Word in my heart, that I might not sin against you ~Psalms 119:11
