Scripture ScribblesShalom my friends and Welcome to Scripture Scribbles – my notes and thoughts on the weekly Torah portion. This week’s Torah portion is called Emor meaning Say or Speak. This portion begins with the instructions for Priests concerning becoming unclean by the dead.

As always, test everything to the Word, keep what is good and throw out the rest. Remember, we are all on a journey and I am certainly no authority on anything.  Honestly, I’m just stumbling along like everyone else, doing the best I can. 😉

📖 1 Thessalonians 5:21 … but test everything; hold fast what is good.

Lev 21 This chapter applies only to the priests.

Lev 21:24 We are told in this verse that Moses spoke to Aaron and his sons AND all of the people of Israel.

👣  So if these instructions were only for the priests, why would Moses tell all of the people these instructions? Because the people share in the responsibility of holding the priests accountable.

Later in Kings and Chronicles, this knowledge is the basis for the charges against Israel when they create their own priesthood.

Lev 22 This chapter continues to explain who is and isn’t allowed to eat the food offerings.

Something that really stood out to me in this chapter is just how many times the Father says “I am YHWH”. Often times we just read over it because it is repetitive and we don’t even notice how many times it occurs. I highlighted it in my bible so it really stands out.

👣  Why do you suppose that the Father continues to repeat Himself? Could He be reminding us of His authority and position in our lives and showing us that HE is our source of wisdom?

Something to consider – What does the Father think when we question His wisdom and His instructions? If everything comes from the Father, then He is the source of everything. Think about that for a minute. He is the source of wisdom! So when we question His wisdom, we are questioning the very source of all wisdom.

Wow, that is serious. I don’t know about you but I had never considered that I was questioning the very source of all wisdom.

Do you think that that is why He tells us not to lean on our own understanding?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh
    and refreshment to your bones.

Proverbs 3:5-8

Lev 23 This chapter is all about YHWH’s appointed times.

The Spring appointed times reminded the people of how YHWH had saved them and it foreshadowed the coming of Messiah the first time. These are fulfilled but we still celebrate them to remember what was done for us.

The Fall Appointed times are still to come and teach us about Messiah’s 2nd coming. These foretell about the bridegroom coming, becoming clean before the wedding and the marriage supper.

Lev 24:16  Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

In my opinion this is not just saying a curse word using the Father’s name. This is much more serious than that. The name or authority and character of YHWH is what is being blasphemed here and that is a very serious offense. The consequence is death by stoning.

Lev 24:19 The commandments for an eye for an eye were given to judges and officials in order to pass judgements. However, in Yeshua’s time these commandments were being twisted by the people and thus they were giving themselves the freedom to abuse others, and to seek retaliation whenever they wanted. Yeshua addressed this in the sermon on the mount. (Matthew 5:38-42)

I like to put sticky notes up. This is one that is SO true!
EMOR Ezekiel 44:15-31

Ezekiel chapters 40-48 are all prophetic about the future temple. In this portion, we are reading about the future priests being established again.

👣  I found this passage to be quite interesting. We read in Lev 24:16 that whoever blasphemes the name will be put to death – by stoning. However in this passage we read that the priests are charging Yeshua with blasphemy because He says that He is the son of God (what they would consider blasphemy against the name) and yes He is given death but NOT death by stoning.

📖 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.  ~Psalms 19:14

📖 I have stored up YOUR Word in my heart, that I might not sin against you ~Psalms 119:11
