Scripture ScribblesShalom my friends and Welcome to Scripture Scribbles – my notes and thoughts on the weekly Torah portion. This week we are on Torah Portion #25, Shemini meaning Eighth. This portion comes after the 7 days of consecration and now the sin offering on the Eighth day.

As always, test everything to the Word, keep what is good and throw out the rest. Remember, we are all on a journey and I am certainly no authority on anything.  Honestly, I’m just stumbling along like everyone else, doing the best I can. 😉

📖 1 Thessalonians 5:21 … but test everything; hold fast what is good.
TSAV LEVITICUS 9:1 – 11:47

Lev 9:7 Aaron makes atonement for himself and the people.

Lev 9:23 The glory of YHWH appeared to all the people.

📖 Lev 9:24 And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the pieces of fat on the altar, and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.

👣  The alter fire was started by YHWH Himself and therefore it was Holy! He gave instructions that it was to be perpetually burning Lev 6:9, 6:12, 6:13

👣  It is important that we remember that man can not make something Holy. We can not adopt something from somewhere else and claim it as holy for the Father. Why? Because while man can be made holy by the grace of YHWH, that holiness is through YHWH. It is not something that we can do on our own because we are not holy in our own right.

Man can’t abolish, create or declare holiness

Lev 10:1-2 Aaron’s sons (Nadab and Abihu) offered strange fire. This fire was NOT holy. Remember man can’t declare something holy and this fire was not holy.

Lev 10:4 So now we have 2 dead bodies that have to be removed. The priests can’t touch the dead bodies because they would become unclean, so Moses calls in their cousins to remove the bodies.

And the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying, “Drink no wine or strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. 10 You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean, 11 and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them by Moses.”

Lev 10:8-11

👣  I think this is interesting. We usually see YHWH speak to Moses and tell him to speak to Aaron but in Lev 10:8-11 the Father speaks directly to Aaron.

Strange fire. Perhaps we should take a moment to consider this strange fire that Aaron’s sons brought before the Father. They went in expecting Him to consider it Holy even though it came from their own making.

Do we have strange fire in our lives that we bring before the Father?

We MUST choose who we really want to follow: Self or YHWH and then We must be diligent about looking for any strange fire in our lives and getting rid of it.

Lev 11 This chapter covers the dietary laws.

SHEMINI 2 Samuel 6:1 – 7:17

2 Sam 6:1-11 Everyone is celebrating because David is bringing the Ark of YHWH home! However, the Ox stumbles and Uzziah puts his hand on the Ark to steady it and he is struck down because he touched it. David, angry with the Father, doesn’t allow it to come into the city for 3 months but leaves it with Obed-edom the Gittite who is blessed during this time.

2 Sam 6:11-15 King David hears that Obed-edom has been blessed these three months and so he decides to bring the Ark home. After 6 steps they make a sacrifice. I have often wondered what the 6 steps were about. Could it be tied to the 6,000 years before Yeshua returns or could it have something to do with the meaning of the number 6 or vav? Such good rabbit trails for someone interested!

👣  I don’t know about you but I can remember being taught that David danced naked or some say he was in a loin cloth. However if we look at 1 Sam 6:14, we can see what David was wearing.

“And David danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod. “

So David was dressed like a priest, wearing a linen garment with the ephod over it. Something similar to this image.

The Ephod Description

So if this was the case, why then did Michal say that he had shamelessly uncovered himself? One theory that I think makes sense is that the King was not dressed as a King. Here he was, leading the Ark and all of the people into the city, dancing and worshipping and he wasn’t even dressed like the King that he was – instead, he was dressed like a priest. And because of her disgust for him not being or looking “Kingly” she was barren.

SHEMINI Matthew 3:11-17

17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 3:17

📖 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.  ~Psalms 19:14

📖 I have stored up YOUR Word in my heart, that I might not sin against you ~Psalms 119:11
